Our overall aim for your property is to enhance the beauty and productivity of your three main back garden areas. You already have a beautiful home and the existing hardscape provides the perfect canvas for an enhanced planting that will complete the composition and add character and productivity to each outdoor space. In our planting choices, we have aimed to ensure food and cut flower production throughout the seasons.

The side patio design approach is sunny, low-maintenance, warm and floral.  Our planting has a few showy and unexpected flowers (winter and summer blooming) mixed into interesting plant groupings of perennial edibles (mostly citrus), evergreen perennials and architectural succulents.  The palette of greens, splashes of chartreuses, soothing blues, and burgundy accents play nicely off the warm colors of the patio and house.  Please take a look at the plants shown in the following Pinterest link – https://www.pinterest.com/Pine_House/nunan-side-patio -- for a sense of the overall look we are envisioning for this space.

 

The back patio bed design is shade tolerant, lush, edible, and floral. The color scheme we’ve used includes green, silver, and variegated foliage, with blooms in blue and peach tones. Because this is such a key view from your kitchen, we have really focused on evergreen plant material and have included a number of winter-blooming plants along with warm-season blooms, for year-round interest.

 

The overall visual effect we’ve achieved in your kitchen garden area is traditional and floral, with a mixture of lush flowers and structured evergreen ornamental plants, alongside some of your favorite fruit trees, berry vines and veggie beds.

Kitchen Garden:

The design for your new kitchen garden is a mix of edibles and ornamentals tied together by a sophisticated color palette of greens, silvers, blues, and blooms in pinks, peaches, corals, purples and blues. Upon entering the kitchen garden space, there is a central low container (or bowl), filled with culinary herbs and strawberries in the center of a formal, potager-style entrance.  On the other side of the bowl is a bench backed by a lush, floral background of roses, lavender and small-scale Italian cypress.  The four corners of this center space are marked by four Mandarin oranges under-planted with lavender, fragrant scented geraniums (edible), catmint and Santa Barbara daisies (both major pollinator-attractors).

To the left of the formal entrance are the raised wooden veggies beds.  On the fence around the veggies are blackberries, red raspberries and golden raspberries interspersed with roses and under-planted with a mix of flowering blue catmint, strawberries, hens and chick, and ornamental grasses.  On the back side of the deck, along the pathway leading to the downstairs apartment is a flowering clematis in a gorgeous dark purple and an passion vine that will produce edible purple passion fruit.

 

On the right side of the entrance is an orchard with four fruit trees.  These include an apple (we suggest a multi-graft option with 3-4 varieties of apples on one tree), Warren pear, Santa Rosa plum and Blenheim apricot.  These four trees will be under-planted with ground-cover Chamomile, which can be harvested and used for tea and medicinal purposes.  The wall in the orchard will be covered by a beautiful, peach colored climbing rose under planted with variegated sage, catmint, red hot pokers in a very pretty warm colored shade called Orange Vanilla and some upright Tuscan rosemary (our favorite culinary variety).  Under the wall is a planting of two different varieties of blueberries (for maximum cross-pollination and fruit production).  Across from the wall is an arbor with Concord grapes on one end and red table grapes on the other.  The style of this wooden arbor maximized production and looks very beautiful.  The other addition to the orchard is a cutting garden of summer blooming flowers. This will provide color all summer and be another fun way to interact with the garden.
